I want to read a book that says "Contact us for Access" in the online catalog. Why can't I place the book on hold?
Books with the status "Contact us for access" are housed in the People's Archive, our local history department located on the fourth floor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library. These books do not circulate, so they can not be checked out or placed on hold.
We can scan or copy the table of contents, index, and up to one chapter of our books to provide some access during this phase of reopening. We can not scan books in their entirety due to copyright restrictions. We can also suggest alternatives for finding the same information or other copies of our materials.
If you are interested in accessing a book, please e-mail peoples.archive@dc.gov
