How do I get a library card?

Answer

If you're over 13 and you live in our service area, you can sign up for a library card online by visiting www.dclibrary.org/getacard. You will be e-mailed a temporary library card number and PIN, which is good for 90 days and can be used to place holds and access most online resources.

In order to get a permanent library card, you'll need to visit one of our locations in person before your temporary card number expires. Adults must present two current forms of traceable identification, one to prove identity and one to prove place of residence. Examples include:

  • driver's license
  • rent receipt
  • utility bill
  • bank book
  • apartment lease
  • letter on letterhead from a shelter

Children of any age can get their own library card by applying in person with a parent or guardian present.
